We’re deep into NaNo Prep Season, and this week, we’ve asked participants to share their thoughts on how to craft great plots and build immersive worlds. Today, author and entrepreneur Gabriela Pereira shares her method of mapping out her story:
As a New Yorker born and raised, I think of an outline as being like a subway map. What I love about this approach is that it allows you to see how the various threads of your story work together, but you can also tease those elements apart and look at them individually to see how each thread holds up on its own.
When you make a subway map outline, each line represents a different subplot or story element you want to track. The dots (or stops) represent scenes in your story. Some scenes are like local stops on a subway and apply only to one story thread, while other scenes are like express stops and represent intersections between the story threads and mark key moments in your story. For an example of this technique in action, check out the subway map of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games.
Want to learn how to put together a story map like this? Here’s a step-by-step guide.
Exactly what it says on the tin: a retelling of Magic Kaito canon, although a lot more gay and an overall more serious tone. Now with 100% more consequences + bad coping mechanisms! Saguru is intended to be the primary, if not only, pov character. Eventual Sagukai.
This work is not yet posted, but feel free to ask me about it!
chapter one
status: complete
Saguru arrives in Japan and begins to get settled in. Also features the Adam's Smile heist.
chapter two
status: complete
Saguru properly makes a first impression with Aoko and Kaito, and attends the statue heist!
chapter three
status: in progress
Following his failure at the previous heist, Saguru brushes up on what he knows about KID while trying to make it through finals for the term. Aoko invites him to hang out over break.
chapter four
status: not started
The whole Saguru-Figuring-Kaito-Out ordeal.
I have a lot more outlined but I'm not entirely sure on the chapter breaks. I'm still trying to figure out how I want to work Akako in because I can't stand how Gosho handles her (sob). Any questions or interest in the story, feel free to let me know!

summary
Black Org Saguru AU. This is a series of vignettes exploring the AU, and of course there is eventual Sagukai worked in. This is a very different version of Saguru & I love him very much.
